Nets fall to the Spurs 102-75
The Nets took on the Spurs in San Antonio on the opening night of their first back to back of the season. Jarrett Jack returned from a hamstring injury that had previously kept him sidelined in the season opener against the Bulls. The Nets have never beaten the Spurs on the road, and looked to change that on Friday, but failed miserably.
The Nets started off strong in the first half and actually led at halftime, but that quickly changed. They scored just 28 points in the second half compared to the Spurs, who scored 60. The Nets turned the ball over seven times in the third quarter, which is something that will have to change if the Nets want to start collecting wins.
Brook Lopez led the Nets with 17 points and a measly 3 rebounds. Jarrett Jack helped out with 12 points and 7 assists. Joe Johnson shot 1-7 from the field for 2 points, which puts him at 5-22 from the field through the first two games. Johnson, the second highest paid player in the league, has also recorded the second most minutes in the NBA, behind LeBron James. Nets rookie, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has continued to impress as he posted a line of 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Through the first two games, Hollis-Jefferson has the fifth best plus-minus among all rookies.
The Nets shot 5-16 from three but what really hurt the Nets was their lack of rebounding. The Spurs outrebounded the Nets 56-32 and got 10 offensive rebounds compared to the Nets who only had 2. The Nets look to rebound (figuratively and literally) against the Grizzlies on Saturday. It will be Lionel Hollins’ 500th career game as a coach, 415 of those games coming as the head coach of the Grizzlies. Hollins led the Grizzlies to the Western Conference Finals and a franchise best of 56 wins in 2012-13. Something to note is that Mike Conley is a free agent this summer and has a great relationship with Hollins from their time together in Memphis. The Nets, who probably have the worst point guard rotation in the NBA, should look to sign Conley and use Hollins as a selling point.
